Moving into a new house is an exciting time, sometimes so exciting that minor things you should be doing get overlooked. Thanks to Realty Times, we have a few key tips to make sure you don’t forget to do the obvious!

Change the locks. As soon as you get the keys to your new home, the first thing you should do is change the locks. You don’t know how many people still have a set of keys to your home so get them changed right away for your family’s safety.

Make a list of your belongings. When you move all of your belongings from one home to another, losing or misplacing something along the way is a strong possibility. Create a list before you move of all of the items that are most important to you. Packing things in clear bins will help you see what is inside and make it easier for you (and movers) to see exactly where that bin should end up.

Make minor repairs and paint before you are moved in. This may seem very obvious but it can be easily overlooked. You could wait until you move in, but it would make it much more difficult to paint around everything. Whether you plan to hire professionals or do the work yourself, it will make your move in day less stressful if the work gets done before then.

Clean everything. Everyone can agree that it is much easier to vacuum and mop floors if there is not furniture or rugs getting in your way. Not only is it easier, but you don’t know how clean the previous owners were so it’s a good idea to give the house a good scrub.

Now is also the time to change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly. Then each year after, you can remember to do this again on your move-in anniversary date.
